The Ghana Black Stars have been Officially eliminated from the 2023 AFCON after the conclusion of Group C games on Tuesday.
The elimination was foreseen by a 50-year-old Swiss coach, who once humorously referred to himself as the ‘prophet unknown in his own country’ in an interview with media outlet Swiss Info.
Savoy told Ghanaians that their next AFCON will be like the last one after his team’s narrow 2-1 loss to Chris Hughton’s squad at the Baba Yara Stadium in September 2023.
In a post-match press conference, Savoy accused Kenyan referee Peter Waweru of favoring Ghana during the crucial encounter. While Ghana secured a 2-1 victory, the Central African Republic’s coach didn’t hold back his words, taking the opportunity to express his dissatisfaction with the refereeing decisions and then placing a curse on Ghana, who had also been eliminated in the group stages of AFCON 2021.
Fast forward to AFCON 2023 Ghana’s Black Stars AFCON campaign has just ended like their last one after the Indomitable Lions beat The Gambia on Tuesday evening.
On Monday in their last group game, Mozambique scored twice in second-half stoppage time to almost end hope of Ghana’s hope of reaching the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) round of 16.
The Black Stars looked to be cruising into the last 16 thanks to two JordaAyew’s penalties, one in each half.
However, just like they did in 2021 AFCON group game against Comoros in Cameroon two years ago, Ghana let the minnows back in and conceded stoppage-time goals to Geny Catamo’s penalty and Reinildo Mandava’s header which combined with Egypt’s draw to surely send them home.
The Black Stars will now head home after the only hope of reaching Round 16 through the third-best-placed team was Shattered by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
