England and Manchester United Legend, Gary Neville has joined numerous others to appreciate the officiating of the 2023 AFCON.
There’s been no single case of bad officiating or VAR error since AFCON started and Neville believed EPL and European referees need to come and learn from African referees.
The officiating levels have massively improved from two years ago in Cameroon where Zambian referee, Janny Sikazwe, bizarrely ended a game five minutes from time – twice.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) selected a group of 26 center referees, 30 assistant referees, and 12 VAR referees to oversee the tournament, which ends on February 11.
The tournament is just a few days to end and the unsung heroes of the tournament have been the referees, their video assistants, and how the technology has been used in general across the six stadiums in Ivory Coast.
Gary Neville reacting to the officiating said “The standards of officiating set by this year’s AFCON are honestly staggering. It’s like they invented it. The premier league and all of Europe have a lot of learning to do.”
