Nigerians have taken to social to drag Italia Serie A giant, Napoli for not posting Osimhen and anything related to the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
Nigeria striker and Africa Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen, who guided Napoli to win their first league title in 33 years, has not been celebrated despite his progress in the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The 24-year-old scored 26 Serie A goals in 32 appearances in 2022–23 and managed 31 goals in all competitions last season.
While other clubs and leagues are celebrating their players who are participating in the AFCON, Napoli has never once posted a player or anything related to the AFCON.
The issue of Napoli snubbing the AFCON didn’t come as a surprise, in 2021 they refused to release Osimhen leading to many Nigerians wishing the club to relegate for that single act.
Later on, the president of the club Aurelio De Laurentiis said the Italian club would not sign African players unless they agreed to a clause that would cause them to miss out on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This simply means the Italian club is not happy that their players are playing in the AFCON when the Leagues matches on and this has made Nigerians call out the club for their racist act.
“Napoli won the league with the best African player in the world.
They can’t even congratulate him for progressing to the biggest African competition in the world.
Every club has congratulated Asian and African players but Napoli.
This is why the Italian league fell off.
Racismo” a Nigerian on Twitter.
Nigeria edged out Angola to book their place in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals through Ademola’s only goal.
The Atalanta winger struck four minutes before half-time in Abijdan, turning in Moses Simon’s cross to book a last-four date with either Cape Verde or South Africa.
