Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has compared the clash between South Africa and neighbours Namibia to the rivalry between Netherlands and Belgium.
Bafana Bafana will be out to secure their first points in the group stage as they face their neighbours Namibia at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo.
The Brave Warriors caused one of the early upsets of this year’s AFCON by recording their first-ever win at a finals by beating Tunisia on Tuesday.
Despite being only matchday two, South Africa must approach neighboring as a knockout encounter, while the Brave Warriors can secure a spot in the next round with a victory
“As I said it’s something special. All those guys are playing in South Africa. So, they want to show something. They want to beat us and it’s a normal thing in sport. When you are two neighbour countries and they play against each other, I know that with Belgium players against Holland, it’s the game of the year. So, tomorrow [tonight] it will be the same also for us,” Broos said.
“You know, I don’t think you can compare the friendly game of four months ago and the game of tomorrow because tomorrow [this evening] it’s a crucial game for us but it wasn’t really a crucial game four months ago because it was a friendly game and we were in preparation for the AFCON,” Broos added.
Historically, Bafana Bafana have dominated with seven wins in nine encounters against Namibia. Nevertheless, their last meeting in 2019 concluded in a 1-1 draw.
In the context of Afcon 2023, Namibia secured a victory against Tunisia in their opening group game, while South Africa suffered a loss to Mali. This positions Namibia with increased confidence and higher odds of winning against Bafana Bafana.
