Senegalese player Krépin Diatta has reacted to his country’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Senegalese winger accused the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of being “corrupt” following the reigning champions’ exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on penalties to hosts Ivory Coast on Monday.
According to the Monaco player, the officiating was the reason why the Senegalese were eliminated from the AFCON.
“You killed us, you are corrupt. Keep your African Cup ” Monaco winger Diatta said to CAF staff in an outburst overheard by reporters on leaving the stadium in the Ivorian capital Yamoussoukro.
“You can’t decide the fate of a country like that. It’s incomprehensible. You don’t want to look at VAR, it’s abused. They killed our competition. He further said.
Africa Cup of Nations defending champions Senegal were sent home after a penalty shootout defeat to hosts Ivory Coast on Monday. Franck Kessie scored the winning spot-kick having leveled the game from 12 yards in the final five minutes of normal time, after Habib Diallo’s early goal for the Lions.
As hosts, it has not been a straightforward AFCON for Ivory Coast, and manager Jean-Louis Gasset was sacked after winning only one group game. However, they squeezed into the knockouts as the lowest-ranked team before appointing Emerse Fae to take charge of the rest of their tournament
