Kenya made a significant stride Friday in its preparations to host the 2027 AFCON by launching the construction of a 60,000-capacity modern stadium in Nairobi.
This is in addition to the ongoing renovation at the Kasarani Stadium which is set to be completed by December before action moves to Nyayo National Stadium.
President William Ruto presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of the Talanta Sports City at Jamhuri along Ngong Road.
The design departs from the old ‘shield-like’ structure, adopting a more modern and illuminated appearance at night.
The construction timeline spans from March 2024 to December 2025, just under two years. With Kenya set to host AFCON in 2027, this time frame allows a buffer for unforeseen delays.
China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) will be responsible for constructing the stadium, under the supervision of the Kenya Defense Forces
“To get to the top of the global sport and creativity, we have to start at the bottom, right down to the foundation which is infrastructure development. That is why this groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Talanta Sports City is another step up the ladder of our bottom-up transformation agenda.
“Renovations at Kasarani, Nyayo, Bukhungu, Kipchoge Keino Stadium will be done concurrently with this, and we are seriously considering another stadium in Mombasa. We will find a place in Mombasa to do a good stadium,” added the President.
