Fans have called for the removal of Kenya from the 2027 AFCON hosting rights after the country is yet to begin works on hosting infrastructure with less than four years to the tournament.
The East African countries were awarded hosting rights in June last after beating stiff competition from Botswana, Nigeria/Benin, and Algeria.
While Uganda and Tanzania have already started work on their facilities, Kenya has just released a proposal to renovate two stadiums in Nairobi.
The unseriousness from Kenya has made fans call for the removal of Kenya and replace it with Rwanda which will soon complete the renovation and upgrade of the Amahoro stadium.
Just yesterday, the Uganda Minister for Education and Sports Janet Museveni toured Nakivubo Stadium and Mandela National Stadium Namboole. The two facilities have been undergoing renovations in readiness to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
In a statement by the Kenya government, “The Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums in Nairobi will be renovated for the 2027 AFCON. Renovations will include a roof, improved playing surface, flood lights, LED lights, and electronic advertisement.
Nyayo Stadium currently has 30,000 seats adorned with the Kenyan flag, while Kasarani Stadium will have 65,000 seats. Nairobi will have three AFCON stadiums by 2027.
According to the statement the Nyayo Stadium will host a World Cup qualification game in 2024, while Kasarani Stadium will be closed until 2025 for AFCON games.
