It was a Super Sunday for the team Nigeria at the 2023 African Games as they moved up to fourth on the medals table after clinching 20 Medals in various sports.
It started with Badminton as Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori won Nigeria’s first Gold in the African games by beating his compatriot Godwin Olofua 2-1 in the Men’s Singles final.
Nigeria did a clean sweep in the men’s single by also winning the bronze medal.
Opeyori and Godwin Olofua after the Men’s single final also settle for silver in the Men’s double final after losing 2-0 to Algeria. It didn’t end there as Nigeria also clinched bronze in the Women’s Single and Double event making it six medals in Badminton.
Nigeria’s glorious moment came in the Wrestling event as all Nigeria finalists in the Women’s categories won Gold.
The likes of Mercy Genesis, Christianah Ogunsanya, Odunayo Adekuoroye, Esther Kolawole, Blessing Oborududu, and Hannah Reuben all won Gold after qualifying for the finals of the women’s wrestling event.
In Weightlifting, Nigerian won five medals as Kalu King won two bronze medals in the men’s 55kg while Favour Agboro won two silver and 1 bronze medal in the 61kg
Nigeria also won Bronze in the Men’s and Women’s Table Tennis events and bronze in Chess making a total of 7 Gold 4 Silver and 9 Bronze won by Nigeria on Sunday.
