Team Nigeria on Tuesday won seven medals in Taekwondo and track and Field events to take their overall medals to 85 and maintained their second position.
Nigeria’s started the day with a bronze medal as Olayinka Olajide won Team Nigeria first medal in athletics at the African Games in Accra, winning Bronze in the women’s 100m in a time of 11.55s.
This fellow with a silver as Usheoritse Itsekiri ran an astonishing race, coming through in a time of 10.23s (-0.8) and upgrading his Bronze from Rabat 2019.
The Gold started coming when Elizabeth Anyanacho claimed Gold in the women’s Taekwondo -67kg defeating Mohammed Aya of Egypt.
This fellow with two Gold from the field event as Chukwuebuka Enekwechi successfully defended his African Games Shot Put title. While Ruth Usoro left it late until her very last jump, leaping from 2nd to 1st place, winning the Gold medal on her very last attempt in Women’s Triple Jump.
Nigeria also won Bronze in the Women’s Hammer Throw Bronze for Naija in women’s Hammer. Sade Olatoye came very close to winning the Gold medal in women’s Hammer Throw, throwing a then Games Record of 68.56m, but the Algerians came fighting back to claim Gold and Silver in the Event. Olatoye had to settle for Bronze throwing a Season’s Best of 68.92m.
Nigeria ended day two of the Track and Field events in Style as Omolara Ogunmakinju put on a show for Nigeria in the mixed 4x400m, running an absolutely stunning anchor to bring Nigeria home with Gold in a time of 3:13.26.
She made up a 15-metre+ deficit and swung past the Botswana anchor with just 30 metres to go. Botswana had to settle for Silver in a National Record of 3:13.99.
