The Confederation of African Football, CAF could potentially postpone the 2025 AFCON in Morocco to January 2026.
CAF had initially planned to hold Africa’s football fiesta in the summer, for the second time in its history, after that of 2019 in Egypt, which took place during the June/July period.
However, FIFA recently announced the creation of its Club World Cup with 32 teams, scheduled for the same period.
Faced with this situation, CAF would have considered moving the AFCON to mid-July/August 2025, a rumour which could already be “impossible”. However, this option is suitable neither for players (holidays) nor for the start of the club season (resumptions).
Thus, the only solution envisaged by CAF would be to postpone the event till January 2026, a few months before the World Cup as in 2022 in Cameroon. It is now essential to closely monitor the management of calendars.
Qualifications for the AFCON, World Cup, playoffs, championships, and other competitions to make the decision.
