Fans around the world have called FIFA to exclude the USA from hosting the 2026 World Cup after Gun violence erupted during a Super Bowl parade celebration.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada but the gun violence situation in America has made people question the safety of fans who will be coming to support their various teams.
This is coming after at least one person was shot dead in the US city of Kansas during a parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’s Super Bowl victory.
Police said 21 others were wounded during Wednesday’s mass shooting. Eight of them were children.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves detailed the toll of the shooting at a news conference and said three people had been taken into custody. She said she had heard that fans may have been involved in apprehending a suspect but could not immediately confirm that.
The shooting was at least the 48th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
The 2026 World Cup games will take place in 16 cities. All matches will be played in North America across all three countries: Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
The United States will have the most cities hosting the games, with 11 in total. Canada will have 2 cities hosting games, and Mexico will have three. Usually, World Cup matches are all hosted by one country in any given tournament. This will be the first time that three countries are sharing hosting duties. (Japan and South Korea were co-hosts in 2022.)
