The Atlas Lions of Morocco have received an official invitation to participate in the next Copa America which will take place in the USA, according to Kora Maroc.
The 48th edition of the Copa América begins on June 20 and will feature all 10 CONMEBOL countries and six nations from CONCACAF. The tournament will be played in 14 U.S. cities, with the final coming on July 14 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
According to reports, this has been around since last week, and this latest news could mean the North Africans will be the first African side to play in the prestigious competition.
Owing to CONMEBOL’s somewhat limited number of registered national football federations, countries from other continents are usually invited to participate to make up the 12 teams necessary for the current tournament format.
Since 1993, two teams from other confederations have also been invited. In all, nine nations have received invitations: The nations are Costa Rica, Honduras USA, Japan, Jamaica, Mexico, Haiti, Panama, and Qatar have all been invited.
